Interns Celebrate Completing Their Summer Assignments

blog-interns-celebration

The excitement was palpable as interns arrived to help with setting up the classrooms for the evening. Girls in heels and boys in ties moved chairs and tables and reviewed their presentations, then the guests began to arrive. A bountiful potluck supper provided by students and their families was followed by the dynamic Project Expo. This is a series of five-minute rotations, when interns present their final project and an overview of their summer experience through a powerpoint. The room was packed with hosts and families jockeying for seats to hear the students tell their stories.

The final portion of the evening was the awarding of certificates to interns and portrait photographs. This is when we thank the hosts for their generous support, and the parents for encouraging their children to participate. Another successful summer program completed, and the teachers have one last week to rest before fall semester begins…

Interns Learning Firsthand About Work

blog.interns_2016

This summer 28 rising seniors are working what is, for most, their first job, while earning school credit for Work Experience. And beyond expanding their skills and preparation for the real world, they are also having a great time! Interns are placed based on their career interests, and this summer there are students at hospitals, a law office, a youth center, a senior center, a fashion boutique, a real estate company, an insurance company, a chamber of commerce, a restaurant, a cupcake bakery, a fitness center…and of course at design companies (our academy career path)! Interns also attend the weekly seminar class at school where each session focuses on transferrable skills such as stress management, time management, job satisfaction, etc. Two weeks down, four to go, so “follow” this newsblog for more stories about our terrific group of young people and their summer journeys…

Senior Bar-B-Que Fun!

blog.bbq2016.jpg

Every year the graduating seniors enjoy one last AOAT blow-out at the park – jumper, football, grilled burgers and dogs, and most important: the friends they’ve shared their high school journey with for the past four years!! Stay in touch, guys: with each other and with AOAT teachers. Much love, bon voyage!!!

Awards! Scholarships! Hurray!

blog.awards16

This year five deserving seniors won the annual scholarships awarded by the San Fernando Valley Giving Circle. There were many other awards – from academic achievement to creativity to dedication – and the morning finished with heartfelt goodbyes from Seniors who thanked teachers and friends alike. Social Studies teacher Ms. Neustaedter organizes this event, as well as administering the scholarships when winners go to college in the fall. Many thanks for all your hard work!

Mock Interviews 2016

mocks2016.blog

Our students say a big THANK YOU to the community volunteers who came to campus to provide this terrific practice for them! Generous AOAT supporters conducted 37 individual interviews over three days for all Juniors who plan to do internships this summer. These “mock interviews” empower the young people who enthusiastically polish their skills at professional presentation and learn from the feedback and suggestions. The interviewers were very impressed with this year’s crop of intern candidates, and had a hard time selecting just one student each day to “hire”. This honor earns the “winners” extra credit – but more importantly, extra confidence!
